Following a brutal fourth quarter of 2022 that saw Bay Area companies announce thousands of job cuts, 2023 is starting off in a similar fashion. One Bay Area-based company and two others that have operations here informed California's Employment Development Department about layoffs. And another locally-based company also is reportedly laying off staff members. The Bay Area-based companies affected are: GlobalFoundries Inc. in Santa Clara is cutting 50 local jobs. Late last year, the semiconductor company said it would be reducing its 14,000 global workforce with reports at the time indicating it planned to eliminate less than 800 positions.
